Arable Biomass Crop Production
welcome to the future!
- new non-food markets - construction, pharmaceutical, pesticide
- fewer inputs
- shorter growing season
- double cropping opportunity
- reduced harvesting costs
- removes herbicide-resistant weeds ... and so it goes on!
Farming4profit is entering a new phase of crop production. A range of crops currently grown in the UK for their grain yield have been identified as containing a diverse range of chemicals some of which are capable of replacing toxic and environmentally damaging products used today, while others appear new to science. So diverse are the range of chemicals available that the market opportunities are expanding rapidly already covering pharmaceutical, construction and agricultural pesticides.
Plant-derived chemicals are renewable, more sustainable and relative to their end-use can be more environmentally friendly than the products they replace.
There are no products at the commercial stage yet, but developments are rapid and research is on-going. Small quantities of chemical have been produced in laboratory conditions with the first on-farm pilot extraction having proved most successful. Further extraction will take place this autumn with two UK crop species, with Proof of Concept trials to begin with one of the leading UK universities this winter. Simultaneouse crop assessment is taking place in the UK and Italy, with university involvement in the UK and Africa. End-users across a range of markets and countries have expressed an interest.
Commercial partners are sought to develop the production chain and chemical manufacturers to maximise the market shares of the renewable products available. We would like to hear from:
Farmers - especially those with baling and handling facilities, but must also have bale storage. Forage management systems of particular interest include biomass drying, pelletisers. Mixed farming systems with livestock and crops are best suited at this stage.
Contractors - baling and mowing equipment.
On farm extraction plants - we know of two in the UK, but are there more?
Pharmaceutical and pesticide companies seeking new active ingrediants.
To date this has been a low budget self-funded research program spanning some ten years. It is not our intention to highly gear this project but for it to grow organically. 'Early adopters' have so often in the past failed through cash flow, or one market inflexibility. We do not intend to become one of them!
