V141OL HO,LL Speciality Oilseed Rape

Key Benefits

A conventional winter oilseed rape with a valuable high oleic low-linolenic (HOLL) oil profile
Used to produce healthy low-transfat and stable frying oil offering a new market opportunity
Improved yield and gross output compared with
the earlier variety, Spendor
Good agronomics and disease resistance
Much improved vigour and plant type
Trialed extensively in the UK and National Listed in 2006

Yield and Quality

V141OL gross output is only 9% below the average for conventional varieties
V141OL has a high average oil content of 44.5%
A significant premium is available for the oil
The gross margin for V141OL can be much better than the highest yielding conventional varieties at current premiums

Mean of controls: Fortis, Disco, Winner, Castille
Mean gross output = 4.62t/ha

Six independent trials carried out by NIAB showed excellent field performance
V141OL gave a significant yield advantage over the earlier HO,LL variety, Spendor

Mean gross output = 4.32t/ha

Disease Resistance

V141ol shows excellent phoma and stem canker resistance
The variety also shows good Light Leaf Spot resistance

Agronomy

V141ol is medium height with excellent lodging resistance and stem stiffness
It shows medium flowering and medium to early maturity
V141ol has good autumn vigour
Small numbers of oilseed rape volunteers can greatly increase the linolenic acid content and reduce the
oil premium
Fields should be chosen with volunteer control in mind (e.g. rotation and stubble hygiene)

Drilling Rates

Aim for an even spring population of 50-60 plants
per m2
Target seed rate depends on expected establishment and winter losses
Seedbed quality, previous cropping and agronomic factors need to be considered with the aid of local knowledge and experience
Drill by target seed number (seeds per square metre), not seed weight
